☕ Morning Coffee with SARS: Is Your Cup Half Full… or Half Taxed?

2027 First Provisional Tax Season

"Before we brew the numbers, let's make sure you're drinking the right coffee."

☕ The Morning Brew

You know that feeling when your phone buzzes with a reminder about provisional tax... and your first thought is:

"Does this even apply to me?"

You're not alone.

Every August, we speak to taxpayers who assume provisional tax doesn't apply to them because they earn a salary. Others are convinced that earning a little interest or rental income automatically makes them provisional taxpayers.

The truth?

Neither assumption is always correct.

Before we calculate a single Rand, we first need to establish whether the provisional tax rules apply to your circumstances.

And that conversation always starts with the right questions.

☕ Today's Blend

One of the biggest misconceptions about provisional tax is that it's another type of tax.

It isn't.

Provisional tax is simply a way of paying your normal income tax during the year instead of waiting until your annual tax return has been assessed.

For the 2027 year of assessment, the first provisional tax return (IRP6) is due by 31 August 2026.

What many people don't realise is that this isn't simply a calculation of what you've earned between March and August.

Instead, SARS expects you to estimate your taxable income for the entire tax year - from 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027.

That estimate should be realistic, supported by the information available today, and take into account what you reasonably expect to happen for the rest of the tax year.

☕ Let's Stir Things Up

Before preparing an IRP6, we always ask one simple question:

Are you actually a provisional taxpayer?

You may be if you receive income from:

  • Your own business or sole proprietorship
  • Freelance, consulting or independent contractor work
  • Commission income
  • Rental property
  • Farming activities
  • Foreign income
  • Certain investment income
  • Other taxable income not taxed through PAYE

But here's the important part...

Every taxpayer's circumstances are different.

Your age, the type of income you receive, whether you carry on a business or trade, and the exclusions provided by SARS all play a role.

That's why we don't believe in assumptions.

We believe in asking the right questions before preparing the right return.

☕ Your Coffee Checklist

Before your first provisional tax return can be prepared, ask yourself:

✔ Has my income changed since the beginning of the tax year?

✔ Do I earn income outside my normal salary?

✔ Have I started freelancing, consulting or running a business?

✔ Do I receive rental income?

✔ Do I expect my income to increase or decrease before February?

✔ Have there been any significant tax events this year?

If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions - or you're simply unsure - it may be worth checking whether provisional tax applies to you.

☕ One Final Sip

Good provisional tax planning doesn't begin with a calculator.

It begins with understanding your tax position.

At Exponential Brilliance, we first determine whether you fall within the provisional tax system. If you do, we'll prepare your IRP6 using a realistic estimate of your expected taxable income and guide you through the process from start to finish.

If you don't, we'll explain why - giving you confidence that you're meeting your SARS obligations without unnecessary administration.

Because every great tax decision starts with the right blend.
