Team Exponential Brilliance will R-O-C-K you this 2022 Tax Season!

by Amanda Roothman on 4 July 2022

Team Exponential Brilliance's legendary #TaxDivas don't do drama, we do business.

And when your tax affairs become our business, we are ready, once again, to rock your expectations right out the stadium.

Some facts around the 2022 Filing Season:

The season is short, very, very short:

  • 1 July 2022 - 24 October 2022 for non-provisional taxpayers, and
  • 1 July 2022 - 23 January 2023 for provisional taxpayers

This comes with a whole lot of changes and new rules. Let me explain:

SARS has made significant changes to the Filing Season this year. Over 3 million individuals, which SARS assumed to be non-provisional taxpayers, have been auto assessed over the last weekend. The information on these assessments were gathered by SARS from third parties (such as employers, banks, medical aid administrators, pension fund administrators, and so forth), and by using artificial intelligence and system algorithms.

In the same media release, SARS has warned that non-compliance and understatements will be dealt with hard and costly. SARS warned specifically about understatement of income or claiming of impermissible expenses. It will cost you dearly, they said.

Considering these warnings, and the onus resting 100% on you, the declarant, my question to you is this: Did SARS take the following into account, when they have issued your auto-assessment:

  • Your travel allowance claim, they don't have your logbook yet?
  • Your medical expenses that you have not claimed through your medical aid?
  • Your expenses to be claimed against commission income?
  • Your home office expenses?
  • Your rental loss, or rental profit?
  • Your capital gains or capital losses?

... to name but a few scenarios.

With the above being mentioned, you must be sure... very sure... if you decide to accept the auto-assessment.

And to go a step further, you are only awarded 40 business days to accept or reject this auto-assessment, from date of receipt of the sms notification of the auto-assessment being raised. If you do not agree with this assessment, and you do nothing, the return will be regarded as submitted and becomes final. The onus still on you, the taxpayer, to ensure that it was correct.

With all this in your mind, you may despair.
